Invisalign vs Braces: Which One Is Actually Right for You?

By the Hey Dental team · Reviewed by Dr Shaista Siddiqui ·

So you’ve decided you want straighter teeth. Good decision. But now comes the next question: Invisalign or traditional braces? It’s one of the questions we hear most often at Hey Dental, and the honest answer is that neither option is better for everyone.

In short, Invisalign usually suits mild to moderate crowding, spacing and bite issues in patients who will wear their aligners for twenty to twenty-two hours a day. Braces are often the more predictable choice for complex tooth movements, or for anyone who would rather not have to remember to wear something. The right choice depends on your teeth, your lifestyle and what you want to achieve, which is what a consultation is for.

Let’s break it down so you can walk into that consultation feeling informed.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic trays (called aligners) that are custom-made to shift your teeth gradually into position. You change to a new set every one to two weeks, and each set makes small adjustments. The aligners are very discreet, so most people won’t notice you’re wearing them, and you take them out to eat, drink and brush.

Treatment time depends on complexity, but many cases are completed within six to eighteen months. For mild to moderate crowding, spacing or bite problems, Invisalign can work very well. At Hey Dental we use digital scanning to plan your treatment before you start, so you can see a simulation of how your teeth are planned to move.

How traditional braces work

Traditional braces use small brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by a wire that is adjusted periodically. They apply steady, controlled pressure to move teeth into alignment. Modern braces are much smaller and more comfortable than the bulky brackets of decades past, and ceramic (tooth-coloured) options are available for a more discreet look.

Braces are very versatile. They can handle severe crowding, complex bite issues and rotations that clear aligners sometimes struggle with. Treatment typically takes twelve to twenty-four months, though this varies. One advantage is that braces work around the clock without relying on the patient to wear them: they’re always on.

The lifestyle factor

This is often the deciding point for adults. Invisalign aligners are removable, so there are no food restrictions. You take them out, enjoy your meal, brush your teeth and put them back in. Braces come with a list of foods to avoid (sticky sweets, popcorn, hard nuts) because these can damage brackets and wires.

The catch with Invisalign? Discipline. You need to wear your aligners for twenty to twenty-two hours a day for them to work properly. If you might forget to put them back in after lunch, or you tend to lose things, that’s worth thinking about honestly.

For teenagers, both options can work well. Many teens like the idea of clear aligners, but braces can be a better fit for younger patients who may not keep up with wear time. At Hey Dental, we have a frank conversation with teen patients (and their parents) about which option suits their personality and daily routine.

What can each option treat?

Invisalign has come a long way. It can now treat a wide range of issues, including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, crossbites and open bites. However, there are still cases, particularly severe skeletal discrepancies or complex tooth movements, where traditional braces have the edge.

If your case is on the milder side, Invisalign may well suit you. For more complex situations, braces might get you to your goal more predictably. In some cases a combination works well: braces for the larger movements, then aligners for refinement.

Cost comparison

At Hey Dental, braces start from AED 2,000, and Invisalign packages start from AED 7,250, including complimentary whitening at the end of treatment. The final fee depends on the complexity and length of your treatment, and we confirm it at your consultation. You can also check our special offers page.

The real value isn’t only in the price. It’s in careful planning by the clinician looking after your treatment, and in the follow-up along the way.

What about discomfort?

Let’s be honest: both options involve some discomfort. You’re moving teeth, after all. With Invisalign, you’ll typically feel pressure and mild soreness for a day or two each time you change to a new set. With braces, adjustments can cause similar soreness, and brackets can occasionally rub the inside of your cheeks (dental wax helps a lot).

Most patients describe the feeling as pressure rather than pain, and it’s usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

The bottom line

There’s no single right answer for everyone. The right treatment is the one that has been carefully planned for your teeth, your bite and your life. At Hey Dental, we take the time to assess all of these before recommending a path. Whether that’s Invisalign, braces or a combination, the aim is the same: a healthy, well-aligned smile you’re happy with.

Straighter teeth aren’t only about appearance. Well-aligned teeth are usually easier to clean, which can help lower the risk of decay and gum disease, and correcting a misaligned bite may ease some types of jaw discomfort. If you’re also thinking about the colour or shape of your teeth, our guide to smile makeovers explains how alignment fits into a wider plan.
