How Often Should You Really Visit the Dentist?
It’s one of those questions everyone has an opinion on. Your mum says every six months without fail. Your colleague hasn’t been in three years and says his teeth are fine. Social media tells you dentists just want to sell you things you don’t need. So what’s the actual answer?
For most adults with healthy teeth and gums, a check-up and clean every six months is a sensible starting point. People with a higher risk of gum disease or decay may need to come more often, while some low-risk patients can safely stretch to once a year. Your dentist can recommend the right interval for you after an examination.
The full picture is a little more nuanced than a single number, and understanding why regular visits matter might change how you think about your oral health.
The six-month rule: where does it come from?
The recommendation to see your dentist every six months has been around for decades. It’s a good general guideline that works well for most people with healthy teeth and gums. At these visits, your dentist checks for cavities, gum disease, signs of oral cancer and other issues, and removes plaque and tartar that even careful brushing can miss.
Here’s what catches many people off guard: a lot of dental problems don’t hurt until they’re advanced. A cavity can slowly work through your enamel for months before you feel anything. Gum disease can progress quite far before you notice bleeding or discomfort. By the time pain appears, the treatment needed is often more involved, and more expensive.
Regular check-ups are about catching problems while they’re small and simpler to fix.
Does everyone need to come every six months?
Not necessarily. Some people need to visit more often, while others may be fine at twelve months. It depends on your individual risk factors.
You might benefit from more frequent visits if you have a history of gum disease or cavities, if you smoke or vape, if you have diabetes or another condition that affects oral health, if you’re pregnant (hormonal changes can affect your gums), or if you have a lot of dental work, such as crowns, bridges or dental implants, that needs monitoring.
On the other hand, if you have very good oral hygiene, no history of dental problems, a healthy diet and no other risk factors, your dentist may be comfortable seeing you once a year. At Hey Dental, we assess each patient individually and recommend a schedule that suits their situation, rather than a one-size-fits-all rule. Children’s needs are different again, and our children’s dentistry team can advise on the right routine for your family.
What actually happens during a check-up?
A thorough dental examination is much more than a quick glance at your teeth. Your dentist will look at each tooth for signs of decay, cracks or wear. They’ll assess your gums for inflammation, recession or pocketing (a sign of gum disease). They’ll check your bite and jaw joints, examine the soft tissues of your mouth (including screening for signs of oral cancer), and review any existing dental work.
Digital X-rays may be taken to show issues between the teeth or beneath the gum line that can’t be seen with the naked eye. A professional clean by a hygienist removes hardened plaque (calculus) from areas you can’t reach at home and polishes away surface staining.
Think of it as an MOT for your mouth. You can read more about routine care on our family dentistry page.
The Dubai factor
Living in Dubai brings some specific oral health considerations. In the hot climate we drink more, and not always water. Coffee culture is big, sugary iced drinks are everywhere, and eating out often means frequent exposure to acidic and staining foods. A busy lifestyle can also mean stress-related grinding and less time for oral hygiene.
Many people in Dubai have also moved here from elsewhere, and it’s common to lose track of your dental routine after a move. It’s easy to let years slip by without a check-up while you settle into a new country, a new job and a new life. That’s exactly when finding a local dental team matters most.
“But I brush twice a day, isn’t that enough?”
Brushing is essential, but it’s only part of the picture. Even with very good brushing and flossing, there are areas of your mouth that are hard to clean thoroughly at home. Tartar (hardened plaque) can only be removed by a dental professional. And some conditions, such as early gum disease or small cavities between teeth, often can’t be detected without a professional examination and X-rays.
Think of it this way: you might exercise regularly and eat well, but you still benefit from a regular health check. Your teeth are no different. If you’ve noticed twinges with hot or cold drinks, our guide to tooth sensitivity explains some common causes.
Making dental visits work for you
If cost or time is a barrier, talk to your dental clinic about it. At Hey Dental, a check-up starts from AED 300, and we offer flexible appointment times. Some insurance plans in the UAE cover preventive dental care, so it’s worth checking your policy. We don’t bill insurers directly, but we complete the claim paperwork and provide the reports you need to claim. Preventive visits are also an investment: a routine check-up and clean usually costs a fraction of what a root canal or crown does.
The bottom line
There’s no single number that applies to everyone. The right frequency for your visits depends on your oral health, your habits and your risk factors. What is true for almost everyone is that regular, preventive dental care is usually cheaper, easier and less stressful than waiting until something goes wrong.
Finding a dentist you’re comfortable with makes a big difference too. When you trust your dental team, you’re far more likely to keep those appointments, and that ongoing relationship is one of the most valuable things for your long-term oral health. That’s what the team at Hey Dental aims to be: someone who knows your teeth, your history and your goals.
