Teeth Whitening: What Actually Works and What’s Just Hype?

By the Hey Dental team · Reviewed by Dr Shaista Siddiqui ·

A bright smile is something almost everyone wants, and the beauty industry knows it. From charcoal toothpastes to LED kits sold online, there’s no shortage of products promising to transform your teeth overnight. But not all whitening is equal, and some trendy products can do more harm than good.

So what actually works? Professional whitening with peroxide-based gels, either in the clinic or with custom-fitted home trays supervised by a dentist, is the most reliable way to lighten the natural colour of your teeth. Whitening toothpastes and strips can help with surface stains, while charcoal and other social media remedies have little evidence behind them and may wear your enamel.

Let’s sort the science from the marketing.

Why do teeth become discoloured in the first place?

Understanding why your teeth aren’t as white as you’d like is the first step to choosing the right solution. There are two main types of staining.

Extrinsic staining sits on the surface of your enamel. It’s caused by the usual suspects: coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and strongly coloured foods such as berries and curries. Dubai’s coffee culture plays a big part. These stains can often be reduced with a professional clean and surface-level whitening.

Intrinsic staining comes from within the tooth. It can be caused by certain medications (tetracycline antibiotics are a classic example), too much fluoride during childhood, trauma to a tooth, or natural ageing as enamel thins and the yellowish dentine underneath shows through. Intrinsic stains are harder to treat and usually need professional whitening or, in some cases, veneers.

Professional whitening: what happens in the clinic?

In-clinic whitening offers a safe, effective and predictable route for most suitable patients. At Hey Dental, we use professional-strength whitening agents, typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, at concentrations higher than anything available over the counter. Your gums and soft tissues are carefully protected before the whitening gel is applied to your teeth.

Some systems, such as Zoom, use a light to support the process. What matters most is the concentration and formulation of the gel, how long it stays in contact with your teeth, and the care of the dentist applying it.

Results are usually visible straight away, often several shades lighter after a single session. If you’d prefer a gradual approach or want to whiten at home, custom-fitted take-home trays with professional gel are a good option. Because they’re made for your teeth (unlike generic shop-bought trays), they give more even coverage and help keep gel off your gums.

At Hey Dental, teeth whitening with home trays is AED 1,000 + VAT (current offer AED 800 + VAT), and Zoom in-clinic whitening is AED 1,500 + VAT (current offer AED 1,100 + VAT). For surface staining, our Diamond Cleaning is AED 700 (current offer AED 550). See our special offers for the latest details.

What about over-the-counter products?

Whitening toothpastes can help with surface stains to some extent. They usually contain mild abrasives or low levels of peroxide that polish away superficial discolouration. They won’t change the underlying colour of your teeth, but they can help maintain results after professional whitening.

Whitening strips are a step up, with low-dose peroxide that can produce modest results over a few weeks. They’re generally safe when used as directed, but they don’t fit everyone’s teeth evenly, which can lead to patchy results.

As for charcoal toothpaste, coconut oil pulling, turmeric paste and the other social media favourites? The evidence ranges from weak to non-existent. Charcoal toothpaste can be abrasive enough to wear your enamel with prolonged use, which is rather counterproductive. Our guide to DIY dentistry and social media trends covers more of these.

Is whitening safe?

Professional whitening carried out by a qualified dentist is generally very safe. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity, which typically settles within a few days. Your dentist will check your teeth first to make sure there are no untreated cavities, gum disease or other issues that could cause problems.

The risk rises when people use unregulated products or visit unqualified providers. Whitening from beauticians or questionable online sources can contain inappropriate concentrations of peroxide, which may lead to gum burns, severe sensitivity and enamel damage.

Whitening isn’t recommended if you have untreated cavities, active gum disease or badly worn enamel. A careful dentist will examine your teeth and treat any underlying issues before starting cosmetic whitening.

In the UAE, the Dubai Health Authority regulates dental treatments, including whitening, so make sure your treatment is provided by a licensed dental professional.

Managing expectations

Here’s something that doesn’t always make it into the marketing: whitening has limits. It works on natural teeth, but it won’t change the colour of crowns, fillings or veneers. If you have visible restorations, your dentist will plan carefully so everything matches afterwards.

Your natural tooth colour plays a role too. Teeth with a yellow undertone tend to respond better than those with grey or brown tones. And no whitening treatment will give you paper-bright teeth (which rarely looks natural anyway).

At Hey Dental, we discuss realistic expectations upfront. The aim is a brighter, fresher version of your natural smile, not a Hollywood filter.

Keeping your results

Whitening isn’t permanent, but good habits help your results last. Cutting back on strongly coloured foods and drinks, using a straw for iced coffee and tea, keeping up good oral hygiene and using a whitening toothpaste for maintenance all help. Occasional touch-ups, in the clinic or with your custom trays, can help keep your smile bright over time.

The takeaway

If you want whiter teeth, professional whitening is usually the safest and most effective route. Skip the gimmicks, talk to your dentist and choose treatment tailored to your teeth. At Hey Dental in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, we offer in-clinic whitening and custom take-home kits, always starting with an assessment to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy first.
