Veneers: Everything You Need to Know Before Transforming Your Smile
If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram and wondered how everyone suddenly has such even, bright teeth, there’s a good chance veneers are involved. They’re one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments right now. But before you book a consultation (or worry about the cost), let’s walk through what veneers are, how they work and whether they might suit you.
What exactly are veneers?
A veneer is a thin shell, usually made from porcelain or composite resin, that is custom-made to cover the front surface of a tooth, a bit like a contact lens for your teeth. They can improve the colour, shape, size or length of your teeth. Porcelain veneers typically last ten to fifteen years and composite veneers typically five to seven years, and whether they suit you depends on the health of your teeth, your bite and your goals.
When veneers are planned and made well, they can look very natural.
At Hey Dental, we spend time with patients discussing exactly what they want their smile to look like before any tooth is touched. That conversation matters. Veneers aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and good results come from careful listening and careful planning.
Porcelain vs composite: what’s the difference?
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory from high-quality ceramic. They resist staining well and typically last ten to fifteen years with good care. They also reflect light in a similar way to natural enamel, which helps them look like your own teeth rather than something artificial.
Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth using a tooth-coloured resin. They’re quicker to place, often in a single appointment, and usually more affordable. The trade-off is that they don’t last as long (typically five to seven years) and are more prone to staining over time.
Both have their place. During consultations at Hey Dental in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, we help patients weigh up these options based on their goals, their budget and the current condition of their teeth. You can read more on our veneers page.
The process: what actually happens?
Porcelain veneers usually involve two to three visits. At the first appointment, your dentist will discuss your goals, take photographs and scans, and prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel, often less than half a millimetre. This might sound alarming, but it helps the veneer sit flush and look natural. It is also irreversible, which is why careful planning matters. The scans are then sent to a dental laboratory where your veneers are made.
At your second visit, the veneers are tried in, adjusted if needed and then bonded to your teeth using a special cement and a curing light.
Composite veneers skip the laboratory stage. Your dentist sculpts the resin directly onto each tooth, shaping and polishing as they go. It’s a faster process, but it calls for a skilled hand and a good eye for detail.
Are veneers right for everyone?
Veneers can work well for teeth that are chipped, stained, slightly misaligned or gapped. They’re a useful option when whitening alone won’t solve the problem, for instance with intrinsic staining (discolouration from inside the tooth) or teeth that are naturally uneven in shape.
However, they’re not always the right first step. If your teeth are significantly crooked, orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign might be a better foundation: getting the alignment right first, then refining with veneers if needed. If you grind your teeth heavily, your dentist will want to address that first, since grinding can damage veneers over time.
At Hey Dental, our approach is to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible. We’ll only recommend veneers if they’re a suitable option for your situation.
What about “Turkey teeth” and dental tourism?
You’ve probably seen the headlines. Dental tourism for veneers has grown in recent years, with many people travelling abroad for much cheaper treatment. Results vary, and there are real risks. Heavy preparation of the teeth, lower-quality materials and a lack of follow-up care have left some patients needing complex and costly repair work.
If a deal seems too good to be true, it’s worth asking more questions. Choosing a qualified dentist who takes a conservative approach, and whom you can see for ongoing care, is a sensible investment in your smile.
Caring for your veneers
Looking after veneers is straightforward. Brush twice a day, floss daily and visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Avoid using your teeth as tools (no opening bottles, please) and be careful with very hard foods. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard is a sensible addition. With the right care, your veneers can serve you well for many years.
How much do veneers cost in Dubai?
Cost depends on the type of veneer, the number of teeth involved and the complexity of the case. Porcelain veneers tend to cost more than composite, reflecting the laboratory work, materials and longer lifespan. Composite veneers are more budget-friendly and suit many patients well.
At Hey Dental, porcelain veneer fees are confirmed at consultation and VAT applies. Composite veneer and bonding fees are also confirmed at consultation. We provide a full cost breakdown so you can make an informed decision with no surprises. Doing the work carefully the first time can also save the cost of redoing it later.
If you’re considering several changes at once, our smile makeover page explains how veneers can fit into a wider plan.
